Blurbs of the Pointless Variety

4 Apr

1.  In case you haven’t seen yet (I hear it’s “getting around” on the interwebs) please check out 13 Steps to Get You Through a Rough Day.  A referral to me from BFF Kristine which did not disappoint.  I did exactly as it suggested and printed out the Britney picture for my desk, and inexplicably my mega-annoying work week seemed more surmountable.

Step 1: Print this picture and hang it over your desk.

2.  Can we make fun of my awful outfit today?

Let me preface this.  I freaking lurve dresses.  They are my #1 work wardrobe investment and, if I may humbly suggest to you all, the best work wardrobe investment.  Why? Dresses are usually priced comparably to skirts if you search correctly, but really they’re like getting an extra half off because they’re complete outfits in and of themselves.  If you’re interested in conforming to societal rules, skirts require tops unfortunately.  So then, not only do you have to find a top, you have to match shoes, tights, and whatever else to both those things.  SO MUCH THINKING.

A dress? One thing.  Done.  Shut it down.  Boom goes the dynamite.  This also saves you a good 30-45 seconds in the morning putting on one thing instead of two.  Does anyone else have their mornings timed down to 15 second increments to allow for super-maximum taking advantage of every last second to sleep? I do.  It’s pathetic.  And disordered.  And my relationship with sleep must be dangerously close to an actual clinical case of narco…….. narca…….. whatever that person from Deuce Bigalow had.  ZZZZZZZZZZZ.

Any.  HOO.  I’m obsessed with this dress above that my mama got me for Christmas (thanks, mama).  It’s jersey knit with a wrap detail meaning there are no zippers, no buttons, so it is like your understanding, comforting friend even on the worst muffin top-y day.  It’s amazing how much better your day is when it feels like you’re sitting around in PJs.  Unlike every other day where I eat, like, 3 bites of lettuce and somehow my waistband suddenly becomes some crazed Jumanji python eating me ALIVE and I’m asking myself “Nobody would notice that I had this belt on earlier and I don’t have it on now, right? Right?” [un-clip] “aaaaAAAAAaaaaaHHHHhhhhhhhhh sweet merciful macaroons that is BETTER.”  [resume nomming]

Back over the winter I always wore this dress with my BFF boots, a scarf of some sort, and big gold earrings.  I always really liked it.  Then today it was too warm for boots and scarves, so with 0 seconds left in my rush to catch the bus I needed a solution prontissimo and threw on black tights, black flats, and pearls.  (With no hooks or clasps or other motor skill consuming BS, the pearls carry a time committment of <1 second and are therefore a popular last minute choice).  But unfortunately it took my beloved outfit from cute-in-a-thirty-something-art-teacher-kind-of-way straight to John Goodman guest-starring in The Church Lady.  BLECH.

3.  Earlier I emailed Jeff that I’d be late due to a meeting at the zoo (tonight we learned about a new radiography exhibit in the small mammal house… HOLLER) and he responded, and I quote:

Wednesday afternoon, April 4, monkey screams ring out in the zooooooo skyyyyyyy!

That’s all.  It cracked me up and needed put on the internet for all eternity.  I’d love to yack about more pointless crap but I need to get the eff to sleep due to this week blowing.

Since I don’t want to hog the fun here is a squirrel x-ray parting gift…. Too cool!

Chubby Tuesday Blurbs

21 Feb

Let’s seeee, what happened this weekend…

I got to do a rare cheetah shift at the zoo (because the cheetah volunteers are weak-willed and take the winters off).  I even caught them during their weekly bunny treat! (Sorry, cheetahs gotta eat too.)

Every weekend there is a clipboard waiting for the volunteers with updates that the keepers post throughout the week with animal happenings.  It is a treasure trove of awesomeness and the interesting/funny anecdotes are half the reason I donate my time to the zoo…

THEN.  Then.  Jeff got his question answered on our local sports show.

Oh sorry, was it not clear what a big deal this was? Let me just make sure everyone understands…

MMM HMM Respect.

We are also dog-sitting this sweet little she-beagle for the next week… meet Molly!

Umm… What else do I have for you….. tonight I did boring stuff then capped my evening with a glass of wine and Shake it Up on the Disney Channel.

Perfection.

Sorry this update blew.

May all your Tuesdays be Fat Tuesdays,
Becker Out

P.S. Opening super glue pens with your teeth=not adviseable.

Need I say more!?

The Lion King is the Greatest Thing Ever

26 Sep

My only other birthday request was that we go see the Lion King 3D.  This was a really special thing because Jeff and I are lame and never see movies.  The Lion King now joins this illustrious collection of films that Jeff and I have seen in theaters in the last 5 years: The Simpsons Movie, The Hangover (released on our -1 anniversary), Pirhanas 3D, and Wall Street 2 (Money Never Sleeps).  CLASS ACTS, folks.

I cannot tell you how obsessed I was with the Lion King as a 9 year old.  Like, cannot tell you.  I think I saw it like 5 times in theaters.  Including once when I forced my Grandma to take me, and I caught her sleeping.  I was like “Grandma?!?!?!?!? Wh? Huh? HOW ARE YOU SLEEPING THROUGH THIS?! Are you aware of the cinematic achievement WHICH WE ARE BEARING WITNESS TO??! Just…. just……. how could you?!?!!??!?!”

From there, I had a countdown going till video release day.  My mom, bless her, I guess went out and got it for me that night, because I distinctly remember being driven home from gymnastics practice that weeknight and knowing it was there waiting for me.  People, I remember that car ride.  And I remember slipping it out of its puffy Disney case, gingerly placing it into the VCR, hearing the reassuring click and the resulting whirr, and knowing my mind was about to be blown

Naaaaaaaaaa!!!

[Unintelligible beyond that point]

Tonight was no different.  I promptly told Jeff I loved it as much as I did “like, 10 years ago!”  Jeff was like “Uhh, I think it came out in 1994.”  Crap.  Two thousand one was 10 years ago.  1994 was……. (start menu –> calculator)….. (no I honestly did that)…. seventeen years ago.  Uhh, oops.  Yikes I feel dated.

Anyway.  Lion King teaches a child everything he/she will ever need to know about life.  Loss! Betrayal! Forgiveness! Redemption! Denial! Nepotism! Ecosystems of the African Savanna! MFing Circle of LIFE, for crying out loud!

And… seduction! Seriously… things you don’t notice as a 9 year old! During “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” I’m sitting there going “BFFFFFT what is that!? OMG! Lewd!”

Fig. A:

And Fig. B, a little subtler, but there was a brief “tumbling” moment wherein intertwined lion crotches flashed on the screen… baha!

No really, it is a seriously fantastic movie.  I spent another Saturday morning with the National Zoo lions over the weekend, (Wanna touch my pelt?!), and they are just THE craziest, most beautiful creatures.  Like not to take an abrupt and awkward turn into Seriousville, but to me there is no clearer evidence of a “maker” than these guys…

Just gorgeous!

Otay.  Now if you’ll pardonez moi… I’m off to order this DVD!!

+1 Makes 26

22 Sep

Happy last day of summer! And you know what that means… this little Virgo-Libra cusp is celebrating the anniversary of my expulsion from my mother’s birth canal! WOO HOO!

So, a couple times a year we’ll have a really busy few weeks at work (coinciding with certain events), so for the second year in a row my poor birthday took a backseat to work crazitude.  The good news- it’s winding down now! The downer news- I am beat and useless and didn’t feel like doing anything tonight.  Jeff forced me to choose an activity so I was like “OK fine, I want to go to Rita’s.”  Not sure where that came from, if there is a Rita’s in this area, I haven’t been there since arriving in 2003.  It just spoke to me tonight.  So we got in the car, drove all the way up and down this street that Jeff alleged it was on, only to have him find out he was following google directions to the St. Rita School.  Whoopsie daisy! A water-ice-specific search indicated the closest one was like 20 minutes away.  Ehh.  We had fun driving around and making a plan B.

Now we’re chilling at home alternating between the Republican debate, Scarface, Frasier, Phillies Vs. Nationals, and the sexiest Rihanna videos countdown.  True story: my hubbycakes, who is not the girl-crazy type, is freaking in love with Rihanna.  It’s hilarious and adorable.  I have to laugh because Rihanna is a pretty safe celebrity crush choice if you’re a wife.  I mean, if he picked Reese Witherspoon or some other cutesy girl-next-door type, I might be alarmed.  But my madras-and-brown-sandals-clad spouse is not getting anywhere with the Rihannas of the world.  (Sorry dude).

Anyhoo, thanks to everyone who popped in to say hi with texts, calls, cards, hilarious e-cards of accordion-playing cupcakes, etc.  Nothing makes a gal feel loved (and better about being on the north side of my 20s!) like a buncha facebook wall posts.  Hee.  I love you all- it’s true!

The weekend yoga agenda: tomorrow we have guest instructors and special Kirtan and Jivamukti practices! The former being quite chanting-heavy which has me a little intimidated. Yea, I know, if you know me you’re now saying “Uhhh… Buddy? Since when are you the chanting type?” Uhh, no, no I am not, as it stands.  I have a lot to learn.  And I’m trying to GROW here, people?! OK!?

:-)

And in zoo news… RED PANDAS OMG.  We had 2 babies born that are just starting to come out in public! And, uhh, I, uhh, WANT TO ABDUCT THEM.  Look at these cuddly little furballs!

Aaaand speaking of birthdays, I also share mine with 3 of the lion cubs born last year! Here they are enjoying their birthday bloodsicle…

Tee hee! Sorry, hope that’s not too graphic.

OK, that’s enough fun for this week.  Thanks everyone again for the love- smoochies!

Weekend Photo Dump (Zoo Edition)

21 Aug

Woo hoo… back from a fun weekend with my family in town! Lots of food… Phillies… and today we made the pilgrimage to the Mall and hit the Natural History Museum.  Love those trilobites! And oh man, I FORGOT how friggin’ cool dinosaurs are! Urgh, if only it didn’t remind me how depressing it is that I’m up to my eyeballs in debt for a degree in the most boring subject ever.  Gerr.  On a jollier note.  I also was on duty at the zoo both mornings, and this morning got to escort a behind-the-scenes tour of lions-tigers.  SCHWEET!

I’ll keep the kitties off the interwebs (boo, I know) but had to share this giggle-worthy signage.

Wooooo Wee!

24 Jul

We had a hot weekend here on our little plot of the Eastern seaboard! (You probably hadn’t heard).  Poor Chooch had a heckuva time Friday morning, he had a 3 minute romp with Bernie the obese labrador and was DONE for.  Here is some imagery from his walk Friday afternoon… note this was about 3 feet inside the front door:

Ugh.  And I could kick myself, swiftly, over this. I had been meaning to add these herbs to the deck box all week and my lazy self never succeeded in accomplishing the chore.  And the little sprouts didn’t make it through Friday :-( But when the heck is there time during the week to bust out your gardening tools, glove up, and plant crap?! Ugh. I’m sorry I let you down, sweet innocent parsley and cilantro! Google tells me that plants CAN feel pain so I feel kind of guilty over this! :-(

Saturday was rough but a merciful break from Friday.  My tour group at the zoo cancelled over the heat so I was interpreting instead (just standing outside one exhibit explaining).  3 hours with the Przewalksi’s horses and I was a sweaty and parched mess, and I myself smelled like an equine.  This is what the car registered at when I climbed back in!

We’re down to ninety something today so balance is restored to the world.  I didn’t mind it all that much in the first place, it’s going to take more than that to make me dislike summer! Brang it, Mama Nature!

This weekend was also a sad one in world events, and I won’t attempt to discuss it because I can’t do justice to serious issues.  I can only say the Norway stuff is so heartbreaking :-( Amy Winehouse I have to work a little harder finding sympathy over, but sad too.

Alright… off to find some productivity, hopefully… have a happy week, everyone!
